Ohio Unemployment Rate Keeps Rising

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The unemployment rate in Ohio continued to climb in December, reaching 10.9 percent, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

In November, the unemployment rate was 10.6 percent.

Ohio’s nonfarm wage and salary employment decreased more than 16,000 over the month, ODJFS said.

“Ohio’s labor market weakened in December,” ODJFS Director Douglas Lumpkin said. “Job losses in the service-providing industries led to an increase in the unemployment rate to 10.9 percent.”

There were 641,000 unemployed workers in Ohio in December, up from 624,000 in November. The number of unemployed has increased by 196,000 in the past 12 months, according to ODJFS.

The national unemployment rate remained unchanged in December, holding at 10 percent.

Employment fell in construction, manufacturing and wholesale trade, while temporary help services and health care added jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
