Interview Etiquette: How to Answer Questions Professionally

business team

Interviewing for a job can be quite nerve-racking, especially when you can expect the standard questions that everyone dreads. Being prepared to answer certain questions can help alleviate some of the stress of an interview. Below are common questions asked in many interviews and the best way to answer:

  • What are your strengths and weaknesses? Prepare a list of three strengths and three weaknesses, but only name one of each at a time. Also, propose each weakness as though it is a strength. For example, a weakness could be, “I am a perfectionist about my work.”
  • Why are you interested in this position? Research the company before your interview to help you prepare for this question. By knowing the dynamic of your potential employer you can explain this answer while also giving them praise. For example, you could say, “I am interested in this position because the direction of this company aligns with my career aspirations.”
  • Why are you interested in leaving your current employer? Or, why did you leave your previous employer? Be honest with your answer, but avoid bashing your previous employer no matter your feelings. For example, you could say, “I chose to leave as my career was not advancing the way it had seemed it would when I took the position.”
  • Why should we hire you? Draw from your experiences to demonstrate how you will be able to exceed the expectations of the position.  Show a direct correlation between your past positions and  the requirements listed in the job description.

While these questions won’t be the only questions asked of you during your interview, this is a great start to paving your way to the career you’ve always wanted. Visit here for more examples of interview questions and proper answers.
