This weekend will likely be full of Independence Day celebrations, cookouts and fireworks and sparklers. To insure that your friends and family have a fun and safe holiday weekend, use the safety tips below for all of your fireworks, sparklers and pyrotechnics.

  • Only purchase fireworks and the like from reputable and licensed dealers.
  • Follow directions on the packaging and do not alter the product in any way.
  • Pay attention to local firework laws. If you are unsure of what your area’s restrictions are, call your local police station using the non-emergency phone number.
  • A responsible adult should chaperone children when using sparklers. Children should never handle anything larger than a sparkler.
  • Fireworks should only be lit outdoors in an area clear of cars and buildings.
  • Have a fire extinguisher handy when handling any type of firework and soak spent fireworks and sparklers in water before discarding them in the trash.

For more firework safety tips, visit the National Council on Firework Safety’s website for their safety guidelines.
